Revolutionary Umbrella Repels Rain Using Air

It is about time someone thought of a different approach to the umbrella. I don’t know about you, however I am very tired of umbrella’s folding up in a strong wind, or worse still, taking flight. Then there is the mess when you finally reach shelter, the wet umbrella dripping everywhere.

In the tech age we are definitely due something new.

Well it just might be here already. A team of engineers in China is currently involved in developing something called the ‘Air Umbrella’.

Dubbed a revolutionary new device (by the team behind it of course) the umbrella uses a blasts of air to shield people from the rain.

Shaped like a plastic microphone the unit repels raindrops with the air, creating a dry, one meter wide circle around the user’s head.

A group of graduates from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics came up with the ingenious idea. They have already run a successful Kickstarter campaign and are now at the manufacturing stage.

The engineers had this to say as part of the pitch on the Kickstarter page:

Air is everywhere on the earth. The flowing air can change the moving path of the object. The faster the air moves, the greater the energy is.

There’s no denying that the concept sounds cool:

The jet airflow can isolate some objects. So when we make use of the airflow, we can protect ourselves from the rain drops. Then the airflow forms an umbrella without a visible cover.”

Once the Air Umbrella hits the market, the average price is expected to be about $200.

There is a minor issue with the design however. Since the raindrops are blown about 50 to 70 centimeters away by the air, passers-by who get too close to the use might end up getting soaked by the deflected downpour.

This will obviously make you less than popular when darting your way through a busy city sidewalk on the way to work.

A small price to pay maybe, for such a new-age way of keeping yourself dry. We look forward to seeing the Air Umbrella in the shops in 2016.
