The Coca Cola Powered Cell Phone

A Chinese designer named Daizhi Zheng has created a mobile phone that uses Coca Cola instead of lithium batteries.

Zheng claims he has invented a way of using sugar-based soft drinks to power cell phones. In recent tests he demonstrated that any sweet drink, even sugar-sweetened water would be sufficient enough to keep the phone running much longer than current lithium battery technology.

Daishi Zheng has patented the product as the Bio-Battery. It works by generating electricity from carbohydrates, using special enzymes as catalysts. In the process, the device generates oxygen and water.

The designer claims this sugar-based bio-battery will last up to four times longer than a conventional lithium battery and is much easier to recharge. Buy a can of Cola and pour it into the top. What ever is left over, you drink yourself.

Lithium batteries are expensive and harmful for the environment when it comes to disposal. If Zheng’s Coke-powered cellphone turns out to be real, (some have predicted it to be hoax – note that the cell phone is switched off in all of the pictures) this could be a revolutionary breakthrough in battery powered technology.
