The Longest Pedestrian Bridge Across The Alps
Trift Bridge is best avoided by those that do not have a head for heights. But then if steep mountain terrain is not your thing, you probably wouldn’t choose to hang out in the Swiss Alps anyway.
Because that’s where this vertigo-inducing pedestrian suspension bridge hangs. Stretching over an arm of Lake Triftsee (itself a product of the Trift glacier), in a less trodden area of the Alps, the thin steel suspension bridge looks like it might blow from the precipice in the lightest of breeze.
The delicate construction was originally built in 2004, with an updated (studier) version coming in 2009.
The latest incarnation of Trift Bridge spans a 560 foot gap in the mountains, suspended over 300 feet from the valley floor.
Despite the thick steel ropes and fitted wooden planks, the bridge looks like a complete death trap. In fact that scene in ‘Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom’ springs to mind – One false move and you could tumble over the edge.
Traverse at your peril, that’s all we can say.
