Topmix Permeable – Sucks Up 900 Gallons A Minute

Most drivers no matter where they live have experienced driving in heavy rain. In areas where the road surfaces and drainage systems are less than stellar, flash flooding can occur making it very difficult drive. In some instances it can be down right dangerous.

Well that may all come to an end if Lafarge Tarmac get their way.

The UK company has designed a new type of of super-absorbent concrete that is able to soak up nearly 900 gallons of water in only one minute!

Called Topmix Permeable, streets paved with this special, ‘thirsty’ concrete will not lead to flash-flooding during storms. Furthermore, the surface will also remain free of puddles and potholes.

The system works in that the surface has a matrix of layers, with a loose rubble beneath. Drainage channels are worked into the rubble, to help increase the amount of water absorbed.

During periods of heavy rain, ground beneath the road surface can also act as a reservoir. A spokesman from the company explains in greater detail:

During these periods, this characteristic can aid in delaying the discharge of surface water into water courses or drainage systems reducing the risk of overwhelming systems and causing flash flooding. Water stored within the system evaporates creating a cooling effect reducing surface temperatures.”

Understandably Lafarge Tarmac are doing their utmost to spread the word on their new permeable road surface. If they score a large government contract we could be seeing this a lot more.

And you thought tarmac was boring…
