A Day in the Life: What to Expect During In-Patient Rehab Treatment

rehab treatment

In-patient rehab treatment is a big step to take for someone who wants to seek addiction treatment.

The idea of checking in to a treatment facility doesn’t seem appealing to many. If you know someone looking into in-patient treatment, this article will give you a better idea of the day to day operations.

Let’s get started.

Morning

Most in-patient rehab programs focus on starting the mornings bright and early.

Patients are expected to wake up bright an early and enjoy a healthy breakfast before starting their day.

Depending on the type of program, some might offer early meditation or yoga classes to help patients start their day.

After breakfast, a group therapy session follows. During the group therapy, the counselor focuses on treatment-related topics. It also gives patients an opportunity to share with others about their experiences and challenges with the group.

The morning routine might also include performing chores and checking in with one of the nurses.

Afternoon

Patients usually eat a healthy lunch to recharge prior to afternoon therapy sessions. The afternoon is the most intense part of the day. These therapy sessions include individual and/or group therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This type of individual therapy focuses on finding out specific triggers that result in behavioral responses.

The therapist will focus on finding out which triggers lead to a certain behavior. Then both can work out healthy responses to those triggers.

Group Therapy

Afternoon group therapy often focuses on bringing all the members closer together and form a sense of community. They’ll be able to share their struggles with addiction.

These sessions are meant to be compassionate and sincere to help each other get through the program.

Family Therapy

Family therapy sessions are also a common practice since addiction affects not only the individual.

During these sessions, family members work through their unresolved feelings.

A family member’s addiction can cause codependency, enabling behaviors, and even anger and resentment. Family therapy focuses on remedying those feelings.

Special Sessions

Often times, patients need to focus on other areas such as anger management, grief counseling, and stress managing techniques while in rehab.

Evening

In the early evening, after the intense sessions, patients have a chance to unwind before dinner. They get to enjoy a little free time.

Dinner is usually served around the same time every day. They will enjoy a light and healthy dinner.

Sometimes there might be another short session before bed to talk about their day.

It’s also important for patients to get enough sleep. So lights usually go out at around 9 p.m. each night to ensure every patient gets the proper sleep.
