Did you know that your heater can account for over 70 percent of energy consumption?

It can be so easy to spend thousands of dollars on energy bills during the winter months. Reducing the use of a heater and implementing some winter hacks can keep you warm for cheap this winter.

Turning your thermostat down just 1 degree can cut your energy bill up to 10 percent. Keep your dial down to save money but still benefit from a warm home this winter.

We are here to give you the best tricks and hacks on how to warm up a room while saving energy this winter. You can thank us later!

1. Open The Curtains

Sunlight provides your home with an abundant amount of free, natural warmth. Open the curtains while the sun is shining to keep your home warm, and when the sun sets, close your curtains again. The heat that came in through your windows during the day will go right back out through your windows at night if there is no sunlight outside.

The curtains will also act as a second layer of insulation to your window, keeping you and your family warm all night long. Invest in some thermal windows to ensure that they keep the most heat in at night.

2. Leave The Oven Door Open

In the summer, this can be your worst nightmare; however, in the winter, this could be the greatest idea that you’ve never tried. When you are finished cooking, leave the oven door completely open while it cools down, and the heat will travel through your home to keep it nice and toasty. Plus, if you cook something delicious, the yummy smells will also travel through your home, keeping it comfortable and cozy.

3. Reverse Your Ceiling Fan

As silly as this trick sounds, it actually works! During the warmer months, your ceiling fan should rotate in a counter-clockwise direction when you look up at it. This will give you that wind effect to cool you down.

During the winter, your first instinct may be to turn the fan off; however, if you run your fan in a clockwise direction on low speed, it will keep your house warm. When you reverse your ceiling fan, it keeps the warm air at floor level as opposed to letting it rise to the ceiling or stairwell.

4. Place Fuzzy Rugs on Tile Floors

Do you ever wake up in the morning and walk to the kitchen to make a cup of hot coffee only to go right back to bed because your feet are so cold on the tile? Spread some fuzzy or plush rugs throughout your home to keep your toes warm. The rugs will also act as an insulator to keep heat from escaping through the floorboards. Additionally, they double in purpose by adding a cozy and chic vibe to your home.

5. Cover Your Windows With Bubble Wrap

Bubble Wrap isn’t just a distractive piece of plastic that you can pop for hours on end. It actually serves a few purposes. For one, it acts as an insulator. Cover your windows with Bubble Wrap so the heat in your home does not escape to the cold, outside world.

Just simply cut the Bubble Wrap to the size of your window with a pair of scissors. Then, spray a light layer of water on the window using a spray bottle. While the window is still wet, press the Bubble Wrap on the window with the bubbles facing the glass and press down.

Voila! You have a warm home!

When winter is over, just peel the Bubble Wrap from the top corner and tuck it away for next year.

6. Block Out The Drafts

Are you tired of your warm air depleting through cracks in your doors, windows, and floors? Get rid of those pesky drafts by filling in those cracks with an insulated draft stopper, or you can save money by making one yourself.

Doing this will keep your home warm and cozy, and it will save you money as well. The Energy Saving Trust says that you can save over EUR20 a year on your energy bill just by filling in your drafts.

7. Invest In Flannel Sheets

Most people keep the same sheets on their bed all year long, but linens should be changed at the start of a new season just like you would change your wardrobe. For example, you wouldn’t wear a wool jacket during summer, and you wouldn’t wear a tank top during winter. The same goes for your sheets.

If you don’t already have a nice set of flannel sheets, go ahead and put them on your shopping list. Flannel sheets act as an insulator to keep your warm and snuggly in your bed during the long and cold winter months.

Make your cozy bedroom your favorite place in the whole house by adding a set of flannel sheets to it. Not only are they warm, but they feel amazing on your skin when you climb into bed after a long day.

8. Add Insulation to Your Home

If your home isn’t brand-new, chances are that you probably need to add another layer or two of insulation to your ceiling and walls. Older homes have a lot less insulation than newer homes, but there are even times when even newer homes could use more insulation.

Adding insulation can get expensive; however, the money you save on your energy bills will make up for the cost. Plus, you will warm and cozy for many winters to come.

While it may be a good idea to do an energy assessment through a home energy auditor, you can also do some inspecting on your insulation yourself. To inspect the exterior walls, turn off the power to an outlet and then take the outlet cover off. Look into the outlet with a flashlight and look for the thickness of the insulation in the walls. Do this to every outlet in the house.
