Do you wholeheartedly trust who is watching your children?

If you want to keep an extra eye on things, consider using a nanny cam.

Nanny cams have caught abusive babysitters, thieving nannies, and rebellious teenagers. On a positive note, it also can reinsure you that your nanny is taking great care of your children.

What are five things you should consider if you’re interested in purchasing a nanny cam? Read on to find out.

1. What Will It Be Used For?

Though named a nanny cam, it can be used for many things.

You can use it to watch pets while away on vacation, or keep an eye on your children when they sleep. You can also use it for its original purpose, being able to drop in on the babysitter while out and about.

What are you using your nanny cam for? If you are watching your pets versus your children, you may want different features.

2. The Legality of a Nanny Cam

It is legal to film in your house with a nanny cam, as long as it isn’t placed anywhere private, like the bathroom. Knowing that you can’t put it in the bathroom or if you have a live-in nanny, their bedroom, you should consider where you’re going to put the nanny cam.

The nanny cam can be hidden or out in plain sight. Either way, it is legal to record video.

3. Incognito or out in the Open?

Are you looking for a hidden nanny cam to catch your babysitter in a suspected act? Or are you using it openly as a way to check in on your children throughout the night?

You’ll want to consider how you want to present your nanny cam before buying one. There is a substantial market for hidden Nanny Cams, and you can get your camera hidden in anything from a humidifier to a smoke detector to a picture frame!

4. Wireless vs. SD Card

You’ll want to consider if you wish to live stream the video via a wireless connection or have an SD card that the video is saved on. We recommend a model with both if you can swing it.

Why would you want a wireless connection? Perhaps to check on pets from a distance, or watch any footage live while you’re out and about.

You’ll have to plug in and watch an SD card video later, but it is saved in physical form, which is helpful if you need the video for legal reasons.

5. Other Features

There are several other features that you should consider before purchasing a nanny cam.

Will you get HD? For this, think about how clear of a picture you need.

Two-way audio is an excellent feature if you want to be able to talk back to your babysitter, kids, or pets.

You can find cams that are compatible with your phone or that have an app attached to them. This is best for those who want to watch footage live.

Some cams are fixed in one spot, and others can pan 360 degrees. Do you need just one place surveilled, or do you need to view an entire room?

Will it be always running, or motion activated?

And most importantly, what is the power source that you want? Is there a place you can plug it in, or will it need to run off battery power? Consider placement carefully because of this.
