There are 1.6 billion air conditioning units in the world.

People clearly love to stay cool in the summer! But Unless you want to resort to more creative ways of cooling your home, you need to keep yours in good condition. However, It can be difficult to know exactly what you need to do.

Don’t worry, we have you covered. Read on for 7 air conditioner maintenance tips.

1. Keep it Clean

A clean AC unit is a must. Remove the fan cage on the exterior of the air conditioning unit, then clean the fins.

You can do this by hand or with a vacuum with a soft bristle head. For stubborn dirt, you can use a specialized fin spray.

2. Straighten the Fins

Make sure to straighten the fins in your AC unit. If they bend, they won’t be streamlined and this will reduce the air-flow coming through the fins.

You can straighten them using a butter knife by easing the fins back into a straight position. Don’t insert the knife more than half-way in though.

3. Change The Blower Filter

You should make sure to change the filter in your AC unit at least twice a year. Once before winter and once before summer.

Make sure to use a filter with the same airflow rating. You can find the filter inside the indoor AC unit, where the fresh air return duct enters.

4. Unclog the Condensate Drain Tube

If you see water pool around the furnace when the AC is running, the condensation drain tube has clogged.

Condensation from the AC coils contains bacteria. Over time, these form slime and clog the condensation pan drain tube. If you think the clog too big to handle, don’t be afraid to call in a professional.

5. Clean the Evaporator Coil

On the inside furnace, find the evaporator coil door and unscrew it.

Use a soft brush to dust the coil, and spray with specialized no-rinse coil cleaner. Clean out the drain pan using soap, a little bit of bleach and hot water. Then pour a cup of 50% water – 50% bleach into the drain.

6. Level the Unit

Over time as the soil sets, the pad under you AC unit can begin to tip. If the unit is not level, this can cause the compressor to fail.

Check the level of your AC unit. If it is not level, you can use rot-resistant shims to bring it to the correct level again.

7. Find Air Leaks in Your Home

Air leaks mean your AC unit has to work harder than it should, which can reduce efficiency and can cause damage.

Shut your windows and doors and turn off any fans. Light some incense and walk slowly around the outer walls of your home.

If you notice a spot where the smoke is blowing away or being drawn towards, this could be an air leak. Seal any air leaks you find.
