OK, we’re not suggesting you try to be like those obnoxious fitness couples on Instagram. But working out a little is maybe the best way to get healthier.

Being an absolutely ripped gym rat doesn’t necessarily make you healthier than anyone else who does moderate exercise. What’s important is that you stay active.

In modern society, we spend way too much time sitting down and it’s killing us. Again you don’t need to run a marathon. But doing thirty minutes of appropriate-for-you intensity exercise is one of the best things to do to be healthy.

Wait, didn’t we just say you didn’t need to pump iron to be healthy? Well, you don’t need to have muscles on top of muscles but there are important benefits to weight training.

For one, any type of exercise is good for your mind and health. It can help lower your blood sugar, too.

However, strength training, in particular, will help you as you get older. Having stronger muscles reducing the stress on your joints. This can help prevent conditions such as osteoarthritis, which is all too common as we getting older.

7. Moderation is Key

Somebody once said that one should when to say ‘yes’, when to say ‘no’, and when to say ‘never’.

We can apply this to drinking alcohol. Many people enjoy it regularly and it forms a part of many traditions in cultures around the world. Most of us know that ‘too much’ drinking is bad but there is not any real evidence that one or two drinks here or there cause negative health effects.

It is normal to experiment but there are some substances, such as heroin and other opioids, that can cause strong addiction after just a few uses. These are best filed under ‘never’ but we’re all human. There is an effective treatment for addiction.

Before we dive any deeper, let’s be clear that we are not saying that physical diseases are just ‘in your mind’ or anything like that.

As large as the health industry is, its reasonable to expect there to be plenty of shady things going on.

Be careful of people selling ‘alternative’ treatments with unreasonable promises of curing diseases.

That isn’t to say that it is all false or that everyone who practices alternative medicine is intentionally scamming people. However, it is best to set your expectations on evidence-based science

2. Prepare for Emergency

Emergencies can happen to anyone. Know when and how to contact emergency services. Learning to give first aid is a valuable life skill.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Know how to avoid accidents by learning to drive safely and follow safety measures on the job site, for example.

We are not suggesting you give up hobbies you love, such as skiing or combat sports. But please calculate the risks and rewards of the chances you take. Your loved ones are counting on it.
