There are almost 80 wineries in Lodi producing 100 varieties of wine. Just 2-hour drive from San Francisco and you are in Lodi vineyard country. This is the home of Zinfandel vines dating as far back as 1849.

Ironstone Vineyards

A visit to Ironstone Vineyards is to experience what happens when a man with a vision follows his dream. John Kautz was a row crop farmer who took the brave step to switch to grape growing. With only 12 acres in 1948, he grew grapes and a reputation for quality.

Now the 5,000 acres of wine grapes in the Sierra Foothills and in Lodi produce some of the country’s favorite wines. They were the California Association of Winegrowers, “2012 Grower of the Year”

Choosing just one of their many wines is tough but try Ironstone Obsession Symphony for a white wine that’s easy to drink with food. Taste flowers, peaches, apricots and a touch of citrus.

This is a family business with many members of the family involved in the business. Jack Kautz, is the third generation carrying on the family tradition for taking on a challenge. He competes in challenge swims across the United States.

The tasting rooms of the Jeremy Wine Company are in downtown Lodi. The former bank now offers plenty of interest for wine drinkers. Try Zinfandel, the most famous wine of the region and compare it with Primitivo, and Tempranillo.

Jeremy and his wife, Choral Trettevik have a boutique winery. They say that it was their dream to establish the winery and that their success was in due, in part, to naivete. Thankfully they also had determination and talent.

Worth noting is Jeremiah’s Jug. That’s a refillable jug that helps the tasting along. Relaxation, laughter, and enjoyment are on the menu.
