If you plan on operating a forklift for an employer it’s a must that you get proper training and the license to do it. Getting your forklift certification can be a great choice that can move your career forward and improve your life in some big ways.

1. Know What Forklift To Train On

The first thing you’ll want to think about to get your certification is which type of forklift you’ll want to train on and specifically get certified for. There are multiple forklift classifications and types so you need to decide which one is right for you.

If you have an employer already you should find out what forklift they have and expect you to use. If you’re unemployed and looking to get your certification ahead of time you’ll need to decide on your own which one is the best choice.

2. Opt For An Offline Course

However, keep in mind that a hands-on driving test is a must for getting your license so if you decide to take an online course you’ll have to find a way to take the driving test offline as well.

3. Start Studying For the Written Test

After taking the classroom segment of your course, you’ll need to take a written test to make sure you know all of the right forklift rules, regulations, driving techniques, and safety standards. It’s important to study the material well and know your stuff you can make sure to pass the exam.

You should also find out what is considered a passing grade for the test. In many cases, it will be around 75%, but can be higher depending on the specific course you take.

4. Be Ready to Get Hands-On

In addition to a written test, you’ll also need to take a hands-on driving test to prove you have the practical skills it takes to drive a forklift.

Ask your instructor beforehand what you can expect from the test and be ready to operate the forklift smoothly. Among other things, you can expect that you’ll have to know how to start the forklift, load items of various weights, and do some tight maneuvering.

5. Know What Your Certificate Allows

Once you’ve successfully completed your training and tests you’ll get your forklift licence. However, it’s important to know exactly what it offers you and what you’re allowed to do with it.

Remember that your certification will only be for a specific type of forklift and it doesn’t allow you to operate just any forklift. If you want to start operating a different type of forklift later, you’ll have to go through training again and get certified for that specific type.

Also, keep in mind that a forklift certification is only valid for 3 years. After that time your certificate will expire and you’ll need to get recertified.
