Why Is Proper Body Alignment Important in Yoga?

When we take up the practice of yoga, we may not be in tip-top shape. And that’s okay! It’s a healing practice that will gently guide us into a state of balance.

The trouble is, if we embark upon this life-changing journey when our body isn’t in proper alignment, all those healing moves may exacerbate a problem area.

As such, proper body alignment will prove exceedingly beneficial when it’s time to strike your first pose. Let’s take a moment to clear both the body and mind before beginning our journey.

What Is Alignment?

Chiropractic alignment occurs when a chiropractor uses their hands (or a small instrument) to apply force to a spinal joint.

They lie their patients face down on a table and apply sudden, yet controlled, force to the spine, pushing it beyond its normal range of motion.

What this does is push the joints back into proper alignment. You may hear lots of popping and cracking as this is happening. Fear not! That’s not your spine creaking and cracking.

It’s actually a release of pent up gas between our joints. This is a good thing; it’s like the release of air from a soda can when we pop the top.

Benefits of Yoga and Chiropractic Care

It might not be commonly preached, but yoga is the yin to chiropractic care’s yang. Here’s why.

Proper Body Alignment

Chiropractic care brings the spine into alignment and, therefore, the body into balance. What’s the goal of yoga? To strengthen the body (among other things) and, therefore, bring the body into balance.

So, while chiropractic care is bringing the spine into alignment, yoga is helping the attached muscles strengthen and smoothe. It’s completely symbiotic. And it doesn’t stop there.

Increased Blood Circulation

Both alignment and yoga help to increase our blood flow. Improved circulation allows our lungs, hearts, and circulation to function more effectively.

It also aids in the battle against illnesses and disease. All in all, it keeps our organs working in tip-top shape.

Tightening and Toning

But, it’s not all about strengthening tension-release. Yoga also tones and tightens the body, preparing it for major bouts of healing and a large release of toxins.

A body in optimal health is going to be far more open to receiving the healing benefits that come with chiropractic care.

What do all these improvements mean? We’ll see a reduction in pain, an increase in flexibility, and an overall pep in our steps!
