Digital Thermostats Reviews: This Year’s Must-Have Climate Control Technology

digital thermostats reviews

Smart home devices have penetrated 27% of US households and are expected to penetrate as much as 53% of households by the year 2023.

Among the most popular smart devices people are picking up…

Smart digital thermostats.

Whether you’re wanting to control the temperature of your house from bed, set conditions where your temperature automatically adjusts or want to find unique ways to save on electricity, smart digital thermostats have everything you’re looking for and more.

The only snag is there are a lot of digital thermostats on the market. That makes it hard to pick which one is right for you.

To help add clarity to your thermostat search, below, our team shares some digital thermostats reviews that showcase the top devices of this year!

Ecobee 4

Have you ever heard of Ecobee? If you’re like most people, you haven’t.

That’s because bigger brands like Nest are typically showcased at the top of digital thermostats reviews (and for a good reason, Nest is awesome!). That being said, this year, the brand to beat is Ecobee!

We love Ecobee’s 4th edition because not only does it have Alexa built in but it also comes with a portable sensor that you can place in another part of your home. This helps the device get a more accurate read on your home’s temperature.

The Ecobee 4 is compatible with a number of smart devices so if your home is already smart, you won’t have to worry about Ecobee dumbing the place down.

Lyric T5 by Honeywell

Here’s another brand you don’t hear much about in digital thermostats reviews, Lyric. Lyric is made by electronics brand Honeywell and packs all of the core features you’re looking for in a smart thermostat with none of the bells and whistles.

Because of that “everything you need and nothing you don’t” attitude, Lyric comes in at a much cheaper price point than its smarter competitors.

Nest Learning Thermostat

Alright, the detour is over. We’re back on the main road here.

Coming in third on our list is none other than the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Nest is pretty much the biggest name in smart thermostats and has retained that title for a half-decade or so.

Why?

Because the device is beautiful and functions like a dream.

With the Nest thermostat, you get easy integration with other outstanding Nest products like Nest Home Security. You also get an easy to use interface that makes smart thermostats simple for even the most technologically challenged people.

What we dislike about Nest is that its domination has put a target on its back. Because of that, new products like Apple’s HomeKit are going to be pushing away from supporting Nest devices which may mean that this big brand is on its way down.

Nest Thermostat E

Nest wants to penetrate the market and realizes that its $200.00 flagship thermostat might make that difficult. Because of that, Nest rolled out a much cheaper (like $80.00 or so cheaper) product called Thermostat E.

Thermostat E uses cheaper materials to bring down its price but offers a lot of the same intelligence the premier nest model comes with.

Also, with Thermostat E, you get to enjoy a white color that blends in rather than the flagship Nest’s black color which draws attention to itself.

Depending on what your tastes are, you may like the cheaper model’s design better.

Lux/Geo Wi-Fi Thermostat

Looking to further bring down your digital thermostat costs? We’ve got you covered.

For a less sexy design but good core functionality, you might enjoy the Lux/Geo Wi-Fi Thermostat.

The device boasts excellent geo-fencing features, mobile app integration, and even controls via your web browser. The big issues we have are with the device’s design (which we find to be a little dated) and its not supporting IFTTT which significantly hampers functionality possibilities.

Bosch Connected Control BCC100

Bosch is a solid brand that we trust. Despite that, we do feel like it missed the mark a little bit with its foray into smart home devices.

Don’t get us wrong, we like the BCC100 which is why we included it on the tail-end of our digital thermostats reviews. We just feel like the device isn’t quite as smart as a lot of its competitors.

On the good side, the BCC100 has a large screen that makes you feel like you’re working with a tablet when controlling your home’s environment. For some, particularly those with vision issues, this big interface can be a huge point in the BCC100’s favor. Others might find the screen a little too attention grabbing.

Beyond the screen and the device’s ability to do core smart thermostat things, Bosch left a lot to be desired.

No IFTTT, no geo-fencing, no integration with other smart home devices…

Bottom line, this device does what it says it does and not much more. It’s not a device to build your smart home around.
