How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost on Average?

Have you been considering dental crowns? Dental crowns have been a solution to bring your smile back due to damaged teeth. If your tooth has a cavity that can’t be repaired with a filling, your dentist may suggest you get a root canal. Once that is done, you may want to put a dental crown over that treated tooth.

The two biggest questions people ask are which dental crown is best and how much generally dental crowns cost. If you want these questions answered, keep scrolling. In this article, we are going over dental crowns and how much you’ll expect to spend.

What Is a Dental Crown

A dental crown is a cover for a damaged tooth that has been repaired. Dental crowns are made to look like a regular tooth and can be made from different materials such as ceramic, steel, or porcelain.

Dental crowns are typically put over a tooth that had a root canal done.

When You Need a Dental Crown

If you have a tooth that has been damaged, it will need to be repaired. This is done via a root canal. Sometimes the tooth needs to be scaled down to fix it. This leaves the tooth looking smaller than all of your other teeth and won’t look aesthetically pleasing.

A dental crown can fix that problem and make your teeth look seamless like they were before. These crowns are custom made, molded, and fitted specifically for your mouth.

What Types of Dental Crowns Are Available?

There are four common dental crowns available. Let’s take a closer look at the different types.

Stainless Steel

stainless steel crowns are made of stainless steel. They’re durable and built to last. They are typically put on the molars in the back of your mouth. The disadvantage of stainless steel crowns is their color.

Most don’t like them because they don’t blend in with the color of natural teeth.

Porcelain

Porcelain is by far the most popular type of crown. They have the feel and color of real teeth and can last a very long time. Since they resemble a real tooth, they’re the top choice for front teeth.

Metal/Porcelain Mix

Metal/Porcelain mix dental crowns, also known as porcelain fused to metal crowns (PFM), are another popular dental crown. The metal provides strength, and the outer porcelain provides a good look.

They cost less than porcelain crowns and can easily last up to 50 years or more.

E- Max

Lithium Disilicate crowns (E-Max) crowns are the new crown being used in dentistry today. This crown is all-ceramic and is fused with lithium disilicate. When the two materials are merged, a thin and light crown is the final product. It also provides incredible strength and durability.

This is the most expensive of all the crowns we’ve mentioned when it comes to dental crown prices.

How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost?

So how much do dental crowns cost? This question depends on what materials they’re made of. In general dental crowns will typically cost you $500-$2000 per tooth.

If you want the cheapest dental crowns, go with stainless steel or metal fused with porcelain. If you have a higher budget, go with all-porcelain or the new E-Max crowns.

Most times, dental crowns are covered by most insurance. Talk with your dentist and insurance provider about how much you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket.
