When it comes to cheap travel, you can’t beat backpacking around the world. The backpacker index compares prices based on one night’s stay, three cheap meals and a few extras to figure out what it costs to travel to a country.

This is the index we’ve used to figure out what the cheapest countries in South America are, depending on which city you visit.

Here are the top four cities to visit if you want to make the best of your budget.

1. Quito, Ecuador

At 2,850m above sea level, Quito is one of the world’s highest cities. It’s also a popular tourist destination with just the right mix of modern facilities and colonial charm.

One of Quito’s claims to fame is that it’s within 35 miles of two active volcanoes, Cotopaxi and Pichincha. It was also the second UNESCO World Heritage Site ever proclaimed, way back in 1978.

Besides being one of the cheapest places to travel in South America, the weather in Quito is mild throughout the year. This means any time is a good time to visit.

The main thing to do in Quito is admire the historical city center. You can also take a trip to the top of Pichincha volcano, hike, go horseback riding, or play in the amusement park.

2. La Paz, Bolivia

Another one of the world’s most elevated places, La Paz is a popular spot for cheap South American vacations. There’s never a dull moment in this frenetically-paced city filled with concrete and cobblestones, historic sights, and street vendors.

Highlights of a trip to La Paz include the cable tour to the top of El Alto, walking tours and wine and beer tastings.

3. Cusco, Peru

There’s no point in arranging a cheap South American vacation without visiting the Machu Picchu Ruins. Trips out to this ancient place start in Cusco by train and can be expensive, so shop around before you book.

Other highlights include exploring the Sacred Valley on a bus tour and hiring a motorcycle to get around. Take a breather in beautiful plazas, or put your feet up in the many cheap pubs and restaurants where you can immerse yourself in the local culture.

4. San Jose, Costa Rica

While Costa Rica is not normally a destination to consider when you want to travel South America cheap, San Jose is the exception.

If you know how to shop, San Jose can be a backpacker’s dream. Avoid touristy activities priced in U.S. dollars. You can have a wonderful time enjoying the cuisine, visiting local bars and picnicking among nearby ruins instead.

It’s the best way to see Costa Rica on a budget.
