Kaindy Lake is a scenic mountain lake in Kazakhstan’s portion of the Tian Shan Mountains. Situated close to Almaty, this is a must see sight for adventurous travellers that find themselves in Central Asia’s largest country.

The lake was formed after an earthquake in 1911. The ensuing landslides created a natural dam, where over time rainwater has collected to create what we see today.

However, what makes the lake so unique is the number of dead and bleached spruce trees that stick out of the water – remnants of the trees that were flooded as the lake was formed.

The ghostly image of the half-submerged trees, together with the improbable turquoise water of the lake, make for an incredible scenic sight.

A sight that becomes all the more stunning once viewed from below. Amazingly, the trees have not decomposed. Beneath the surface lies an eerie underwater forest that few have ever seen.
