Wellness Guide: Tips for Staying Active While Working From Home

When your work and your home are in the same location, it’s easy to feel stuck in one spot all day, every day. Thus, staying active is a lot more difficult.

So, to help you stay fit and healthy, we’ve written you this work-at-home wellness guide. This guide covers healthy eating, a healthy work schedule, how to exercise while working, and more.

Working at home is hard enough without letting your health slip. Follow these tips to stay in shape in your home office.

1. Time Blocks

It’s hard for many of us to stop working when we’re “in the zone.” But multiple studies show that taking breaks is good for your health and productivity at work. On the other hand, taking a break whenever you “feel like it” is a recipe for laziness.

The best solution for these issues is time blocking. Schedule work and break times before you start your day. This ensures you spend enough time working and resting.

Alternatively, you can schedule breaks after an appropriate amount of measurable work. For example, if you’re a writer, take a break after every 500 words you write.

2. Have Healthy Snacks Handy

Working at home often leads to two unhealthy eating habits. One is going all day without eating. This one, though, is solved by time blocking.

The other issue is reaching for whatever food is easiest to prepare. That means overindulging in potato chips and other unhealthy convenience foods.

Unless, that is, you stock up on foods that are both healthy and convenient. Carrot sticks, yogurt, and cottage cheese are good examples. Have these healthy snacks handy to keep your brain energy up while working.

3. Exercise While Working

Most remote work is done while sitting or standing. Fortunately, many exercises can also be done this way. And they won’t even distract you if you perform them while you work.

For example, you can sit on an exercise ball instead of an office chair. This way, work out your core without even thinking about it.

There are also some balance board exercises you can do while working. However, you might need a little practice before you can do these during your work.

4. Take Online Exercise Classes

Lastly, take a little time each day to step out of your home office and into your home gym. That is, plan some exercise time into your work-at-home routine.

Of course, it’s easy to lose your motivation to keep this commitment when you’re home alone. That’s why you should sign up for an online fitness class. This adds structure to your exercise routine and gives you a reason not to quit.
