What Are Self-Ligating Braces?

Gold braces, clear braces, metal braces…What is the best choice?

Did you know that braces are not strictly applied to straighten teeth? In addition to the cosmetic benefit, braces are used to shape the jaw or teeth and/or widen the jaw or palate.

When orthodontics is required, the patient’s main concerns are the length of treatment, their appearance in braces, and how uncomfortable will they be.

The answer to those questions depends on the type of braces you choose.

Did you know there’s an alternative to conventional braces? They’re called self-ligating braces. What makes them different and how do they work? Keep reading to find out more.

What Are Self Ligating Braces and How Are They Different?

Self-ligating braces hold the archwire on the brackets with a small, springloaded door. There are no elastic bands. They work with less friction and force.

Patients suffer less discomfort and it’s easier on the teeth. Self-ligating braces are also more efficient, shortening the treatment period.

Elastic bands stretch and sometimes need to be replaced. Food also gets stuck in them. With self-ligating braces, you don’t have those issues.

How Do They Work?

Self-ligating braces work with a clip system that allows the bracket and wire to work with less pressure. There are two varieties of self-ligating braces: active and passive.

Active Self Ligating Braces (ASLB)

This type uses a thick bracket archwire and clip system. The thicker wire offers more control during the course of treatment. This method is very precise in moving the teeth to reach the desired outcome.

Passive Self Ligating Braces (PSLB)

This method is passive in the way that it allows the teeth to move most freely without pressure. It uses a smaller bracket archwire and door mechanism.

Why Choose Self Ligating Braces?

Self-ligating braces are an example of the technological strides and improvements made in orthodontics. They are very efficient. Straighter teeth and bite and jaw alignment goals are achieved as much as four to six months sooner than when using traditional braces.

You’ll schedule fewer follow-up appointments, nearly half of that of traditional braces. In some instances, appointments are ten weeks apart. Time in the chair is also shorter because the wire change or adjustment just takes some clicks rather than a new elastic on each tooth.

They are more comfortable and easier to clean as well. Less chance of trapped bacteria and less plaque.
